RESET is a method of balancing the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
The author of the method is the Australian kinesiologist Philip Rafferty. I was trained by my friend and teacher, instructor of this method Elena Vyatchinova.

What is SER?

SomatoEmotional Release is a therapeutic process designed to rid your mind and body of the residual effects of past traumas and negative experiences.

Where does it come from?
The concept of SomatoEmotional Release was developed over a three year period (1977-1980) when Dr. Zvi Karni and Dr. John E. Upledger worked together as researchers in the Department of Biomechanics at Michigan State University. Dr. Upledger (1932-2012) was a certified member of the American Academy of Osteopathy, an academic member of the British Osteopathic Society, and a Doctor of Alternative Medicine. Dr. Carney, who holds doctoral degrees in Biological Engineering and Biophysics, was a visiting professor on leave from his position as Chairman of the Department of Biological Engineering at the Technion Institute in Haifa, Israel. Their joint research mission was to explore possible areas where the fields of medicine, biology, physics and engineering could come together to better serve humanity.

Their work together resulted in the concept that a physical force exerted on a patient's body during an accident or injury could be perceived by the patient's body in one of two ways:
1. the injured body can immediately begin to dissipate these forces and the natural healing process will follow.
2. The physical forces acting on the patient's body may persist rather than dissipate.
If these forces persist, the patient's body must adapt to this deposition of abnormal physical force. The adaptive response is to isolate or "ward off" the abnormal force so that a kind of "energy cyst" is formed. This energy cyst is a localized area of increased particle activity, which is synonymous with increased entropy. By this we mean that ions and molecules are moving in a disorganized and chaotic manner, so they are not doing their usual work and are not serving the whole body effectively.

This situation of localized, disorganized particle activity or energy cyst formation in the patient's body results in the need for adaptation so that normal "body activities" such as energy conduction can take place. We call the energy cyst a zone of dysfunction. Normal body energy must bypass the energy cyst. A dysfunctional area does not facilitate normal and vital movement of tissues and fluids. The energy cyst actually prevents the body from functioning normally. A reasonably healthy body can adapt to these energy cysts and work around them. However, additional adaptive energy is required to perform the body's functions with this disorganized and uncooperative area. Over the years, as the adaptive energy needed to function is used up, the body's adaptive circuitry begins to lose its effectiveness. Symptoms and dysfunctions appear and become increasingly difficult to ignore and suppress.

Why does the power of trauma lead to the formation of an energy cyst?
The most powerful factor determining the formation of cysts is the emotional status of the person at the moment of trauma. If strong negative emotions are prevalent in a person at the time of external traumatizing forces, they are more likely to persist and
will be the result. We have seen time and time again that people who retain the effects of injuries and accidents are the same people who do not harbor anger, resentment, fear, etc. about what happened. Once these negative feelings are discovered and released, the bodily dysfunction with its accompanying symptoms are free to leave the patient's body.

How does SomatoEmotional Release work?
From the very beginning of the development of this therapeutic process, it has been observed that the patient's body is like a bifurcation". Part of the patient wants to maintain the status quo, after all, life is present, the body is working, even though this work may be ineffective and painful, why risk change? The other part of the patient wants to improve, which means that the energy cyst needs to be dissipated, thereby relieving the body of the need for adaptation and discomfort.
During the SomatoEmotional Release therapeutic process, therapists act as facilitators in collaboration with the part of the patient that wants to get rid of the abnormal energy cyst formation. To accomplish this, therapists encourage the positive aspects of the mind-body and discourage the negative aspects. Therapists help patients to remove the energy cyst from the body by encouraging the body to remember the trauma and thus stop suppressing it.
This relief is accomplished by touching the patient, tuning in to what their positive body wants to do, and assisting in the process. This usually results in the body assuming the position it was in at the time of the external traumatic forces. When this happens, the therapist can feel the body tissues relax as the energy cyst is expelled. In addition, the therapist can feel warmth emanating from the areas that held the traumatic forces, and often feels the force leave the body along the same line it entered.
You may have already guessed that the process of emotional release requires special sensitivity on the part of the therapist and a trusting and positive attitude on the part of the patient. It is a very mystical experience for both parties. It is very difficult to describe in words, but once the release of the energy cyst occurs, it becomes clear without the need for verbal description.

What should the patient expect as a result of SomatoEmotional Release?
During a therapy session, the release of an energy cyst often results in a re-experiencing of the pain, fear, anger, etc. that accompanied the original incident, as well as other details that may have been long forgotten. This re-experiencing of aspects of the original trauma is a very good indication that the treatment is partially or partially relieving the lingering problem. When this type of experience occurs, the patient should not try to suppress the pain or emotions; rather, with the support of the therapist, he or she should allow the experience to unfold and move naturally toward a healing resolution.
The result of somato-emotional release is increased physical and emotional health and well-being, as well as significant relief of the patient's symptoms.
